A new Hollywood thriller titled Bitcoin is heading to Cannes to be sold to studios and streaming platforms, with a stacked cast including Gal Gadot, Isla Fisher, Casey Affleck, and Pete Davidson, directed by Doug Liman.
The film was previously referred to as Killing Satoshi and is being launched for international buyers by Patrick Wachsberger’s 193 ahead of the Cannes market. Affleck plays Craig Wright, while Davidson takes on the role of investor Calvin Ayre. Gadot plays Charlotte “Lotte” Miller, with Isla Fisher also attached. The script comes from WGA Award winner Nick Schenk, and production began in February.
The film centers on Wright, who falsely claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto. The story follows his attempt to prove that claim, triggering a global chase involving tech elites and governments, framing Bitcoin as something powerful enough to threaten the financial system.

The real-world backdrop matters. In 2024, a UK High Court ruled Wright is not Satoshi and barred him from making that claim, undercutting one of the longest-running controversies in Bitcoin’s history.
Behind the scenes, the project is also drawing attention for its planned use of AI in production, including “markerless” performance capture and digitally constructed environments instead of traditional on-location filming.
Why this matters is simple. Bitcoin is moving deeper into mainstream culture. But Hollywood is choosing to tell that story through one of the most widely discredited figures in the space, meaning millions could be introduced to Bitcoin through a distorted lens rather than its actual origin.
What often gets missed is that Bitcoin is open-source, decentralized, and has been battle-tested for over a decade by a global network with no central control. It’s not a story about one man, it’s a system that removed the need for one. One thing is for sure, Bitcoin IS something powerful enough to threaten the financial system.
